(CONTINUED) Pope Francis, originally born Jorge Mario Bergoglio, began his papacy in 2013, becoming the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church. His reign was marked by significant efforts to address issues such as poverty, climate change, and the inclusion of marginalized communities, for which he often faced criticism and pushback from within the Church. This was reflected in his final speech as Pope on Easter Sunday, which saw him condemn the high number of civilian killings in Gaza by Israel, calling for a ceasefire to release hostages and deliver much-needed food and aid into the Gaza Strip.

His death sets in motion a multi-step process by the Church to find the next pope. Tune in with 760 WJR at 8-9 p.m. on Friday, April 25.
