Ann Arbor Deer Cull Resumes

The second phase of a move to reduce the deer population in Ann Arbor gets underway today.

Up to 100 deer will be killed and dozens more sterilized.

11 parks and nature areas will be closed from 3pm until midnight during this 15-day hunt.

Supporters say the hunt is necessary to reduce the number of vehicle crashes involving deer and to protect plants and animals.

Mayor Christopher Taylor opposed the hunt, saying the 250-thousand dollar cost was too high and that the killing of the deer is unsettling to residents.

The shooting is being performed by sharp shooters from White Buffalo Incorporated, a group dedicated to the preservation of native species and ecosystems.
