Will Wayne County Trade Jail For Soccer?

Dan Gilbert’s real estate company, Rock Ventures, offers to build Wayne County a new criminal justice center in exchange for the site of the failed jail project on Gratiot Avenue. Gilbert and businessman Tom Gores are bidding for a Major League Soccer team. Gilbert wants to build a soccer stadium on the site of the party built jail.

The new criminal justice center would include adult and juvenile detention space, as well as a new criminal courthouse.

The county estimates the completion of the jail on Gratiot Avenue and the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice would cost $300 million.

Rock Ventures said it is prepared to build the criminal justice complex for $300 million in exchange for the property and a credit for the new justice complex.

The proposed site of the new jail and courthouse is at East Forest Avenue east of I-75.
Gilbert’s offer asks for an answer from the county by February 20. County Executive Warren Evans released a statement saying he would study the matter.
