Jail Deadline Comes, Goes

Today was originally supposed to be decision day on the future of the unfinished Wayne County jail .

A group led by Detroit Pistons owner Tom Gore and Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wants to convince county officials it needs the site for construction

of a mixed-use development that would include a new soccer stadium..

Detroit is among 12 cities competing for one of four expansion spots for a pro soccer team.

The initial jail construction at the site was halted because of ballooning cost overruns and a criminal investigation into the handling of the construction.

County Executive Evans said he would, today, listen to requests for bids to finish the jail. One contractor says it wants the job.

Evans says he will do that, but now will consider the proposal by the sports owners to build a stadium, and to build for the county a new criminal justice center on a separate site, which would include a jail.
