New Offenders List Debated

The Michigan Senate judiciary committee is holding hearings on a proposed law which would create a child-abuse offender list.

28 year old Erica Hammel of Saint Clair Shores has been pushing for passage of what is known as Wyatt’s Law.

Her son Wyatt, who is now 4 years old, suffered permanent brain damage in 2013 following abuse by Hammel’s ex-husbands girlfriend, Rachel Edwards.

Edwards was eventually convicted of second degree child abuse and sentenced to 33 months in prison.

Erica Hammel said she had tried to get information about Edwards since she was helping care for her son at the time.

She was unable to discover that the woman had two prior convictions for child abuse until after her son had been injured.

Hammel then began an on-line effort to create a child-abuse registry and began lobbying politicians.
