Genital Mutilation Back In Court

A bond hearing is scheduled for today in Detroit Federal Court for a doctor and his wife accused in a conspiracy involving female genital mutilation.
Doctor Fakhruddin Attar is charged with letting Doctor Jumana Nagarwala perform mutilations at his clinic on Farmington road in Livonia.

His wife is accused of helping with the surgeries.

Nagarwala is being held without bond and is facing trial on charges involving two seven year old girls from Minnesota.

Attar and his wife have been held since their arrest last Friday.

Today’s hearing is to determine if they will be granted bond.

The arrests have brought to light details in what is believed to be the nation’s first female genital mutilation case.

All three defendants are part of a small Indian-Muslim community which was the center of a genital cutting prosecution in Australia that sent three people to prison in 2015.
