Court Date For New Genital Mutilation Case

A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for today for a fourth person charged with female genital mutilation.
48 year old Tyahera Shafiq of Farimngton Hills is a medical biller.

According to federal court documents, she was at the clinic back on February 27th where Northville Doctor Jumana Nagarwala performed a genital cutting procedure on two eight year old girls from Minnesota.

The conspiracy charge against her is the latest development in a case that prosecutors say involves as many as 100 girls who have had their genitals mutilated over the last dozen years.

Two unnamed Oakland County women are also facing charges that they subjected their daughters to the mutilations.

Nagarwala, along with Doctor Fakhruddin Attar, who owns the clinic where the surgeries were performed, and his wife are scheduled to go on trial later this year.
