Virgil Smith Election Saga Continues

Former state senator Virgil Smith’s eligibility for a seat on the Detroit City Council could become clearer today.

Smith finished second in the primary earlier this month and won a spot on the November general election ballot.

Smith resigned from the state senate in March of 2016 after shooting at his wive’s car.

As part of a plea deal he was not to hold a future public office.

However, his resignation and the public office provisions were later struck down in circuit court and the state appeals court.

The Wayne County Prosecutor appealed.

The Michigan Supreme Court early last week directed the appeals court to revisit the issue by the end of today.
