Mich. Lawmakers Ponder Veto Override

The Michigan Legislature returns today from its summer recess.

One big item lawmakers are facing is a possible veto override.
Lawmaker are trying to determine if they will attempt to override a Governor Rick Snyder veto of legislation that would have accelerated a sales tax break for motorists who trade in old vehicles to purchase new models.

In vetoing the measure in July, the governor said it was not fiscally prudent.

The legislation originated in the senate, so an override attempt would have to start in that chamber.

It would require a 2/3rds vote in both the senate and the house.

If lawmakers act to try and override the governor’s veto, it would be the first time such an action has been taken since Republicans took control of of state government in 2011.
