Detroit Council Talks About Jail-Stadium Deal

Some Detroit citizens have expressed concerns about a land swap deal that calls for the construction of a new criminal justice complex near I-75 and Warren.

Critics expressed concerns about housing inmates in their neighborhoods and having children walk past the jail to get to school.

The deal calls for Rock Ventures Dan Gilbert and Pistons owner Tom Gores to move ahead with construction of a 23-thousand seat soccer stadium at the site of the unfinished jail on Gratiot Avenue.

Detroit city councilwoman Mary Sheffield, who does not support the deal as it now stands, says it is scheduled to be considered today by the council’s three-member planning commission, but that she will urge moving the measure to a hearing of the full council.
