Oakland County’s Urban Ruin Finally Coming Down

The Pontiac Silverdome is finally coming down.

Demolition of the structure is to begin with a big explosion Sunday.

The explosion is needed to to break up the metal beams that support the upper ring of the stadium.

Each vertical beam in the 42-year old arena will house a small explosive charge.

This will cause the beams to break when the charges are detonated, allowing the steel ring of the stadium to fall to the ground.

Following the explosion, the rest of the demolition work will be done with hydraulic excavators and completed in sections.

There will be public viewing opportunities for the explosion.

If it has to be halted because of bad weather, it would take place on December 10th.

It could take up to a year to complete the demolition on the 127-acre site.
