Cop Shot, Gunman In Custody

A Detroit police officer has been shot by a barricaded gunman on the city’s east side. The officer is in critical condition.

The shooter is in custody. Police threw tear gas into the home, and the gunman tried to escape but was captured.

The gunman has previous violence and gun charges, but no convictions.
The wounded officer is in his 20s and has been with the department for almost two years. His father also is a police officer.

Police said officers were responding to a domestic violence call at 10:40 p.m. in the 5500 block of McDougall near East Kirby . A man, believed to be the gunman, had called police to say he assaulted his wife, and another woman called to say her father fired gunshots.

When the officers arrived, they saw the man standing outside with a weapon. They said he fired at the police, and shot the officer in the head. He was rushed to Detroit Receiving, and underwent surgery.
The gunman was later taken into custody.

The wounded officer is 25 and has been with the force for nearly 2 years.
