New Life For Lee Plaza?

The city of Detroit is trying to renew interest in the redevelopment of the long-abandoned 17-story Lee Plaza.

The high rise opened on West Grand Boulevard in 1929 initially as a luxury residential hotel.

It later was converted into a low income senior housing complex and closed in the 1990’s.

The city announced late last year that it is looking for plans to redevelop the facility.

It could accommodate about 200 new residential apartments.

But 20-percent of them would have to be set aside as affordable residences for individuals making 38-thousand dollars a year or less.

Lee Plaza is located about a mile west of the Motown Museum and the Fisher Building.

The city is asking 295-thousand dollars for purchase of the building and surrounding land.

The deadline for submitting proposals is March 1st.
