$3 Surcharge Proposed For Detroit Events

Are the cost of concerts and sporting events in the city of Detroit going up?
The answer is yes … If one Michigan lawmaker gets his way.

Senator Coleman Young II introduced the bill as a way to raise money for critical services in the city.
A $3 per-ticket excise tax would be charged on all entertainment-related tickets at venues with at least 5-thousand or more seats in cities with a population of at least 500-thousand.
Detroit is the only Michigan city that would qualify.
The money would be distributed back to the city to hire more police officers, firefighters and emergency medical personnel.
His proposal is unlikely to get a hearing in the Republican-controlled Senate and House of Representatives.
