Detroit Council Tackles Budget

The Detroit City Council could today take action of Mayor Mike Duggan’s proposed 2-billion dollar 2018-2019 budget.
The mayor outlined his spending plan on February 23rd.

He said that, if it is approved, it would help end state oversight by a financial review commission.

He explained that the city and state treasury expects a financial audit will show that the city has had three straight years of surpluses and trigger the end of state oversight.

That state oversight began as Detroit emerged from the largest municipal bankruptcy in U-S history.

The mayor’s budget plan would clear the way for the hiring of 141 police officers and double the number of derelict commercial buildings that could be torn down.
