Gay Rights Lawyer Wins A-G Dem Nod

Attorney Dana Nessel is chosen as candidate for state attorney general by Democrats at their state convention.

Nessel defeated Pat Miles, former U-S attorney in Grand Rapids, who was backed by organized labor.

Nessel becomes the first openly-gay candidate to run for statewide office for a major political party.

Nessel was the main lawyer in the successful case that won the right for gays to get married to each other in Michigan.
Also getting endorsements at the convention were Supreme Court candidates Megan Cavanagh and University of Michigan law professor Sam Bagensto.
Nominations become official at a party meeting in the summer.
