Was This Suicide By Cop?

A Fenton man with a history of mental problems was shot and killed by police in Waterford after the man assaulted his mother and threatened to kill his brother.

Police say 56 year old Steven Ballard of Fenton went to his 81 year old mother’s house and assaulted her, and called his brother in Waterford to tell him he was coming over with ‘a shotgun and shells’…. and that death by cop was okay with him.

Bloomfield Twp. police went to the mother’s house, but Ballard was gone.
Waterford Police went to the brother’s house on Barkman near Clintonville Rd. to protect the family and look for Ballard. The family left— and Ballard arrived in a BMW.
Police say they attempted to stop Ballard, and after a low-speed pursuit he was stopped. Officers ordered him to show his hands… but instead he pointed a shotgun at police, and officers shot him. Ballard was dead at the scene.
Police also found a handgun in his car.

Officers were treated for non-life threatening injuries.

The brother told police that Ballard was bi-polar, had recently been denied disability benefits, and was running out of money.
