Former Mich. Secretary Of State To Pay Election Fine

Former Michigan Secretary of State Terry Lynn Land will pay a fine for a funding violation in her losing campaign for the U-S Senate.

Terry Lynn Land and her husband, businessman Daniel Hibma, will pay a 66-thousand dollar fine for Hibma’s 700-thousand dollar contribution to Land’s senate campaign in 2014. The legal limit was 26-hundred dollars.
As Secretary of State, Land was the top enforcement official of state laws governing political campaigns.

During the campaign the Free Press reported that Land had donated more money to her campaign fund than she listed as personal assets under her control. Michigan Democrats filed a complaint with the Federal Election Commission charging illegal contributions. Land argued that money came from a joint account with her husband and were legal.

Their agreement with commission says any violation was unintentional, and they made necessary corrections. Land and Hibma say they agreed to the fine for the purpose of settling the matter quickly.
