Big Project Goes Before Detroit Council

Detroit City Council is scheduled to vote today on a proposed 300-million dollar development of the former Brewster-Douglass housing project:

Dan Gilbert’s real estate firm, Bedrock, has proposed developing the site that would include 900 housing units, retail outlets and green space.

The company said the 22 acres of land would feature a mix of for-sale and rental units with town and carriage homes, flats, walk-ups, and apartments.

The project would take five years to complete and could get underway as early as this fall.

Brewster-Douglas was the city’s largest public housing project before its demolition four years ago.

The city council today is scheduled to vote on a development agreement for the project and a corresponding commitment from the city to kick in 10.2 million dollars to support affordable housing and infrastructure.
