State, Enbridge To Replace Line 5

A deal has been reached to replace the controversial oil pipeline Line 5.
Gov. Snyder’s administration and Canadian pipeline company Enbridge have agreed to replace two oil and gas pipes in the straits of Mackinac with another one that would run through a tunnel below the lake bed.

The plan calls for drilling an opening for the new pipeline through bedrock more than 100 feet beneath the Straits.  It would take seven to 10 years to complete, at a cost up to $500 million — all of which Enbridge would pay.
Line 5 has been the center of controversy, although the company insists the lines are in good condition and could remain in place indefinitely.
Democratic nominee for governor  Gretchen Whitmer has pledged to shut down Line 5 if elected.  Republican opponent, Bill Schuette, has endorsed the tunnel.
