EMU Fight Over Women’s Teams In Court

A Detroit Federal Court Judge who had granted a preliminary injunction to halt the elimination of two women’s sports teams at Eastern Michigan University also ordered the two sides in the dispute to be back in his courtroom today.

Judge George Steeh wants to hear that the parties have worked out a plan for reinstating the schools women’s tennis and softball teams.

The suit against the university had been filed after the school cut several sports programs in an effort to balance its budget.

The men’s programs cut were swimming and diving and wrestling.

The moves affected 58 male student-athletes and 25 females.

The judge ruled that there was enough evidence to show that Eastern does not now provide equal opportunities for its female athletes.

This would be a violation of Title 9, which requires equal opportunities for male and female athletes.
