Ex-Sen. Smith Back In Court For Shooting

Former state Senator Virgil Smith the 3rd is due back in court today in an ongoing legal battle.
Smith had been convicted of shooting at his ex-wife’s car back in 2015.

In a plea deal with the Wayne County prosecutor’s Office, he was given a 10 month jail term and agreed that he would not run for a public office during a five year probationary period.

However, the Michigan Supreme Court, in a slit decision, said he could not be barred from running for office again.

The prosecutors office then went back to Wayne County Circuit Court and filed a motion to withdraw the original plea deal.

Judge Lawrence Talon heard the motion and held a decision in abeyance and set a new court hearing for today.
