Iraqi Deportations Can Start This Week

Iraqi nationals living in the U-S who had been arrested in ICE raids could face deportation this week. The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals declined to reconsider a ruling in December by a 3-judge panel of the court that overturned a Detroit federal Court judge’s decision that blocked the deportation of hundreds of Iraqi immigrants with criminal records.

This ruling means they could be deported tomorrow, seven days after that Appeals Court decision.

Immigration officials have not indicated if they will begin the deportation process tomorrow.

It is estimated the appeals court ruling could affect about one thousand.

But this will depend on whether the immigration officials will opt for a mass deportation and also on whether Iraq would take them back.

The ACLU is considering appealing to the U-S Supreme Court or to seek an emergency motion to try and hold up any deportations.
