Hi Profile Bond Case In Court

A 17 year old Detroit youth is due in court today on an armed robbery charge.

But his case is gaining attention on a much broader front.
Kushawn Moore Junior has been in jail since earlier this month, unable to make a 50-thousand dollar bond.

The American Civil Liberties Union says his case is typical of a cash bail system that needs to be overturned.

Officials say the poor are locked up and held because they can’t afford to make bail while the wealthy are allowed to buy their way out of jail.

The ACLU has filed a federal lawsuit against the magistrates who preside over arraignments at 36th District Court, the court’s chief Judge Nancy Blount and sheriff Benny Napoleon.

The suit calls for a complete overhaul of the cash bail system.
Gov. Whitmer and some Republican office holders have signed on to the issue.
