Abortion Petitions Before State Board

The Board of State Canvassers meets today and could give preliminary approval to two anti-abortion petition initiatives.

They could carry a warning that they hinge on the fate of lawsuits that are challenging new rules about the petition process.
The state Bureau of Elections provided the Board of State Canvassers last week a new set of guidelines for anyone initiating a petition drive for next years ballot.

Those guidelines comply with an opinion issued in May by Attorney General Dana Nessel that declared unconstitutional several parts of the legislation that had been approved at the end of last year.

At today’s meeting, the board is expected to use the guidelines to consider approvals that include prohibiting dilation and evacuation abortions and abortions after a heart beat has been detected.
