Tests Scores Show Michigan Students Struggling

More than half of 3rd graders in Michigan failed the reading and English arts tests in the annual Michigan reading exam.
That’s a slight improvement from last year.
54 point 9 percent of the 3rd graders were less than proficient on the English language arts test.
Reading scores dropped for students by grades 5 and 7, but scores increased by grades 4 and 6.

Elsewhere in the M-STEP results:
Math scores increased slightly in grades 3, 5, and 6, but declined in 4th grade.
The worst performance was in social studies. Michigan saw drops in scores across all grade levels tested — 5, 8 and 11.
Starting in this school year, students in 3rd grade can be held back if their reading level is 1 grade behind the state’s assessment level.
In every tested grade in English language arts, the scores for white
students was at least 29% higher than for African-American students and at least 17% higher than for Latino students.
