Newborn Death In Court

A preliminary exam is scheduled for today for a 16 year old Detroit girl charged with killing her newborn baby. The mother wasn’t charged until last week, eight months after the incident.

The girl had been rushed to the hospital last February after she had collapsed.

At the hospital, it was learned that she had given birth.

Police went to her home on Agnew street and found the baby wrapped in a towel and in a purse in the girls bedroom closet.

An autopsy determined the infant had been stabbed multiple times.

The girl was initially charged as an adult, but within hours prosecutors said a mistake had been made and she would be charged as a juvenile.

No other explanation was given.

The prosecutors office did say the delay in charging her was because of several unspecified issued that arose.
