U-M Takes Old Jail Site

New life for the site of the unfinished Wayne County jail.
Billionairres Dan Gilbert and Stephen Ross are getting together and they will build a 300 million dollar graduate school campus for the University of Michigan.
Gilbert owns the site. Ross is a mega-developer who has given millions to the university. The Detroit Center for Innovation will be a home for students in high-tech fields such as automotive mobility, artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Ross says it’s an effort to get companies to relocate to Detroit.

But that’s not all.

Bedrock and the Ross Related Companies will co-develop the rest of the 15-acre site to include mid-rise residential buildings for UM graduate students, incubator space for new tech businesses and a boutique hotel and conference center inside the former Detroit Police Department headquarters. The project surfaced in a recent tax abatement request that went to Detroit City Council.
