Whitmer Considers Reopeners; Surgeries Coming Back

Gov. Whitmer says she’s looking at ways to relax some of the stay-at-home measures on may 1st. Whitmer says more testing is needed, and they need more help from the feds for testing. Whitmer gives no details. Her current order expires at the end of the month.
Midwest governors say they’re working to re-open the economy of the region. Whitmer and the governors of Ohio, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky say they will work “in close coordination to reopen the economy in the Midwest region.They say it doesn’t mean the economy will reopen all at once, or that every state will take the same steps at the same time.

Some Detroit area hospitals are resuming surgeries that were put on hold for the COVID-19 crisis. Henry Ford is now doing outpatient surgeries at it’s 5 hospitals. Detroit Medical Center and Michigan Medicine are also providing more surgeries. They say critical surgeries, like cancer and heart ailments, are the goal. Some hospitals have laid off employees who were not dedicated to COVID-19.

Michigan has 172 new coronavirus deaths .
Michigan now has 2,093 coronavirus deaths. 1,204 new cases, brings the total to 29,263 – fourth-most in the nation.
Michigan Senate Republicans propose a 5-step plan to re-open the economy, allowing businesses to open under the stay at home order if they use strict safety measures.
Some Republican state house members propose reducing the powers of the governor to declare an emergency. They want to cut the emergency orders from 28 days to 14 days, and after the 14 days the legislature would be able to act.

Benzie County is the only county in the Lower Peninsula with no cases of the virus.

Michigan State University reports they’ve lost more than 50-million dollars, as enrollment is down for the next semester. MSU executives are getting a pay cut. Other colleges are expected to follow suit.
