GM, Honda Team Up To Develop Vehicles, Save Money

Your next Chevy could be a Honda.

General Motors and Honda are teaming up to make cars together.
The two companies announced an agreement that will have the companies sharing basic vehicle designs to be sold under their brands. GM and Honda say they will work together to develop a range of electric and gas-powered vehicles, but it will also allow cooperation in purchasing, research and development and connected service. This means the car companies will use the same machinery and platforms for their various models of electric cars.
In April the two companies announced that GM would develop the platforms for two Honda electric vehicles, but Honda would still create the interior and design of the cars.

This is a far cry from the late 1960’s and early 70’s, when Japanese cars began appearing on US roads, triggering sometimes violent opposition by Americans who said they would “buy American only.”

The US automakers now have a number of alliances with foreign companies. Chrysler was gobbled up by Fiat after the Great Recession.
