School Begins With Changes, Uncertainty

A school year like no other.
Schools have been preparing for both in-person and virtual instruction. Parents have to juggle the new schedule for the kids, and for themselves. In Detroit, the state’s largest school district with nearly 51-thousand students, some schools are going fully remote. If parents are unable to stay home with their child, they can send them to one of the district’s learning centers, where students will take on-line classes with support staff supervision. For face-to-face classes, students and staff will have their temperatures taken before they enter the building. Students will stay in their classrooms all day. Teachers will come to them. Seating will be six feet apart and lunches will be eaten in the classroom.

The latest figures on the virus from the state for the last two days show there were 1,156 new cases and 4 additional deaths. These figures bring the state’s totals to 6,538 deaths and 107,371 confirmed cases.
Detroit’s Greektown Casino is laying off 43 employees due to the pandemic. An official indicated more layoffs may be coming as revenue losses will likely continue for the foreseeable future.
