Covid Rages In Mich; Free App Might Help

The surge continues. Michigan’s latest report has 9,010 new cases of the corona virus and 62 additional deaths. The state had a daily average of 4,505 new cases from Sunday through yesterday. The higher figures have also resulted in more pressure on hospitals. The latest figures show 2,088 people are in the hospital with confirmed cases of the virus. 202 are on ventilators and 484 others are in intensive care.

Because of the uptick in the virus, Beaumont is today reinstating its visitor safety restrictions at its hospitals in Royal Oak, Troy and Grosse Pointe. If a patients has tested positive, or is awaiting a test, no visitors will be allowed except in the case where a patient may be nearing the end of their life, is in labor, or in other extreme circumstances. For patients who do not have the virus, generally, only one visitor will be allowed.

Michigan has reported 50 new outbreaks in the state’s K through 12 schools and colleges. Hillsdale College had the largest number of cases, 18. Other schools reporting at least ten cases were Great Lakes Christian College in Lansing, the Baraga Area Schools and Owosso High School.

MSU basketball coach Tom Izzo has tested positive for the corona virus. He said he has minor symptoms and isn’t sure how he contracted the virus because he has been diligent about wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. No other member of the team has tested positive. Team practices are now being run by Associate head coach Dwayne Stephens.

The Troy Fire Department has shut down one if its six fire stations following word that 6 firefighters tested positive for COVID-19. About 30 have been put in quarantine. The fire department is trying to determine how the firefighters contracted the virus.

The state has launched a statewide corona virus app that will notify users if they have potentially been in close contact with infected people. It is a voluntary program and it’s free. State health officials are urging everyone to try it and put it on their phones.
