Michigan House Votes to Suspend State Gas Tax

LANSING, March 10, 2022 ~ The Michigan House of Representatives voted to pause the 27-cent-per-gallon state tax for six months amid rising prices due to inflation and global Russian oil sanctions.

The legislation follows a request from Governor Gretchen Whitmer and five other Democratic governors to pause the 18-cent-per-gallon federal gas tax.

There is a lot of money being thrown around out there,” said Michigan House Speaker Jason Wentworth to 760 WJR‘s Paul W. Smith. “I don’t think there is a better way to spend it than putting it back in the people’s pockets.”

The bill now heads to the Michigan Senate, and is expected to pass following voting next week.
