DETROIT, June 17, 2022 ~ America observes Juneteenth on Monday, also known as Emancipation Day, which commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
Juneteenth’s date of June 19, marks the anniversary of June 19, 1985, the day Union Army General Gordon Granger announced freedom for all enslaved people in Texas, the last state of the confederacy.
The day became recognized as a federal holiday in June 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
