DETROIT, February 2, 2023 ~ On Tuesday, the Detroit Riverfront Conservancy, the Joe Louis Greenway Partnership, and the City of Detroit announced a cooperative that has established a shared vision for completing both the Detroit Riverwalk and the Joe Louis Greenway.
With the new agreement in place, Detroit Riverfront Conservancy Chairman Matt Cullen says both projects are now endowed for long term success.
“When we’re done, we’ll not only have our bridge-to-bridge riverfront that we’ve been working on for 20 years, but we’re going to have a greenway that will extend through 23 different neighborhoods in the City of Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park, and Dearborn,” Cullen told 760 WJR’s Paul W. Smith.

(CONTINUED) As part of the collective agreement, the Detroit City Council took up a memorandum of understanding Tuesday that pledged $6-million dollars annually for maintenance and operation of the two thoroughfares, provided both projects get completed as planned and that the new partnership establishes an endowment of $100-million to help care for the finished public spaces.
The partnership needs to raise $350-million to both complete the projects and fund the endowment. Cullen stated today that $150-million of that has already been raised.
When complete, the Detroit Riverwalk and the Joe Louis Greenway will combine to create an over 30-mile pedestrian loop that connects neighborhoods while providing equitable spaces filled with art, activities, and community programming.
