Michigan Facing “Dire” Police Officer Shortage

July 26, 2023 ~ Police agencies across Michigan are struggling to fill vacant positions amid an ongoing worker shortage.

Michigan is not immune to the nationwide shortage of people looking to become members of the police force, with a 19% decline since 2001. Reasons cited for the shortage include the COVID-19 pandemic and lowered public perception of police after events like the police killing of George Floyd and other unarmed African Americans.

Michigan Commission on Law Enforcement Standards Executive Director Tim Bourgeois spoke to Tom Jordan and Kevin Dietz about how the state is responding to the shortage.
