Aug. 13, 2023 ~ A MiG-23 fighter jet crashed Sunday during an airshow at the Willow Run Airport in Ypsilanti.
During the Thunder Over Michigan show, two pilots ejected from the aircraft before the plane crashed near the Waverly on the Lake Apartment complex in Belleville, according to a Facebook post from the Detroit Metro Aiport. No injuries were reported from the pilots, residents of the apartment complex, or people at the airshow.
Plumes of smoke were rising from where the plane crashed.
Garrett Cox, promotions assistant at the W4 Country radio station, was at the airshow when the crash occured.
“It was devastating,” Cox said. “Everyone at the venue was in disbelief about what had just happened. My coworker and I saw the black cloud of smoke south of the airport and heard all the first responders rushing towards the scene of the accident.“
According to the post, the cause of the crash has not been determined and the FAA is conducting an investigation. WJR will provide updates on the crash during tommorow’s radio broadcast.
