UAW President Calls GM’s 10% Wage Increase Offer “Insulting”

Sept. 8, 2023 ~ General Motors made its first counteroffer with a 10% general hourly pay increase in a bid to prevent a strike from UAW, though the offer left the union unsatisfied.

GM’s offer, which comes shortly after Ford Motor Co.‘s 9% pay increase offer, also includes two 3% annual lump sum payments, and pay increases for temporary and in-progression employees. UAW President Shawn Fain called the offer “insulting,” falling short of the union’s demands for a four-day work week, return of pension plans, and a 46% pay increase over the course of the contract based on the companies’ spiking profits in recent years.

Daniel Howes, senior editor and columnist for the Detroit News, spoke more about the status of the strike on “JR Morning with Guy Gordon.”
