Michigan Politicians, Jewish Communities React to Hamas-Israel War

MICHIGAN, Oct. 9, 2023 ~ Following a weekend of violence between the Palestinian militant organization Hamas and the Israeli military, Michigan leaders reacted to the war officially declared by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Monday.

Following a surprise attack launched by Hamas Saturday, reports indicate about 700-800 people in Israel have been killed, with 260 people killed near a music festival. About 400-600 people in the Palestinian territory of Gaza, including 91 children, were reported dead from Israeli air strikes as of Monday morning. Homes have been attacked on both sides of the conflict.

(CONTINUED) The attacks from Hamas, stemming from the decades-long Israel-Palestine conflict, drew widespread condemnation and support for Israel from several Michigan politicians, such as Democrat Sen. Gary Peters, Republican Rep. John James (MI-10), Democrat Rep. Hayley Stevens (MI-11), Republican Rep. Bill Huizenga (MI-4) and Senate candidate Mike Rogers. Democrat Rep. Rashida Tlaib (MI-12) expressed grief over the loss of life on both sides while calling for the end of the nearly two-decade-long Israeli blockade on the Gaza Strip, and to end Israel’s “apartheid system” to ease the conflict.

Jewish communities in Ann Arbor and Grand Rapids have already held vigils supporting Israel, with the Jewish Federation of Detroit holding a gathering to support Israel at 7 p.m. Monday, Oct. 9 in Southfield.
