LIVONIA, Oct. 17, 2023 ~ Arab American civil rights groups are suing the U.S. State Department and Department of Defense for allegedly failing to rescue Livonia couple Zakaria and Lalia Alarayshi and other U.S. citizens trapped in Gaza during the Israel-Hamas war.

The lawsuit was filed by the Arab American Anti-Discrimination Committee and the Dearborn-based Arab Civil Rights League on behalf of U.S. citizens trapped in Palestine, alleging that the federal government is not evacuating them while making evacuation plans for U.S. citizens in Israel. The Alarayshis were visiting family when the Palestinian militant group Hamas attacked Israel last week, with Israel responding with airstrikes on Gaza and shutting off the territory’s water and power.

As of Tuesday, about 3,000 people in Gaza have been killed, and about 1,400 were killed in Israel.
