DEARBORN, Oct. 31, 2023 ~ Gov. Gretchen Whitmer cancelled a visit to a fundraiser on Sunday in Dearborn following calls for a protest at the event from a pro-Palestinian group upset over her support of the Israeli government.
She was set to speak at a fundraiser for the Bint Jebail Cultural Center‘s HUDA Clinic, a clinic in Detroit that offers medical care for low-income individuals, when Dearborn attorney and President of the group New Generation for Palestine Amer Zahr called for a protest on Facebook the night before. He said Whitmer “supports Israel and the genocidal campaign against Gaza,” with the governor later saying in a statement that she is working with Congress to evacuate Michigan residents currently trapped in Gaza and that she pulled out of the event because she did not want to a “distraction” to the fundraiser.

(CONTINUED) Many voters in Michigan’s large Muslim and Arab American population feel “betrayed” by Whitmer and President Joe Biden in recent weeks due to their unwavering support of the government of Israel, which is currently bombing and enforcing a siege on the Gaza Strip following the deadly Hamas attack on Oct. 7. Many of these Michigan residents are now refusing to vote for Biden, which may prove harmful to his 2024 campaign since he narrowly won the swing state in 2020.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the death toll in 8,300-8,500 people, with nearly half of the casualties being children. About 1,400 people died in Israel on Oct. 7.
