MSU Board Appoints UNC Chancellor Kevin Guskiewicz as New University President

EAST LANSING, Dec. 8, 2023 ~ Kevin Guskiewicz, chancellor of the University of North Carolina Chapel, was appointed as the new president of Michigan State University Friday morning.

The MSU Board of Trustees approved his appointment in a special meeting to end a months-long, secret search for a permanent president. Guskiewicz joins at a divisive time for the university that is still reeling from scandals like an investigation that found former head football coach Mel Tucker sexually harassed an anti-sexual assault advocate, MSU not releasing documents related to the systemic sexual abuse of disgraced gymnastics doctor Larry Nassar, and recent infighting within the board of trustees.

However, the trustees expressed excitement in Guskewicz, who will serve as the university’s sixth president since 2018. “We have chosen the most qualified candidate to lead the university forward,” board chair Rema Vassar told the student newspaper, the State News. “Guskewicz doesn’t know it yet, but he has always been a Spartan in spirit.”
