DETROIT, May 23, 2024 ~ People who use marijuana every day or nearly every day now outnumber people who say they drink alcohol that regularly.
According to new data from Jonathan Caulkins, a cannabis policy researcher at Carnegie Mellon University, an estimated 17.7 million people reported using marijuana daily or near-daily, compared to 14.7 million daily or near-daily drinkers. The researchers concluded that about 40% of current cannabis users are using it every day or nearly every day.

(CONTINUED)From 1992 to 2022, the per capita rate of daily or near daily pot use increased 15-fold and researchers point out some of that may be due to people feeling more comfortable reporting they use pot because it’s more widely accepted. Most states, including Michigan, allow legal medical or recreational marijuana possession. It remains illegal at the federal level, but the government is moving to reclassify marijuana as a less dangerous drug.
