Wayne State Operates Virtually for Second Day As Tensions Rise Over Pro-Palestine Encampment

DETROIT, May 29, 2024 ~ For the second day in a row, Wayne State University officials told students and staff to operate virtually after a pro-Palestine encampment was set up by student activists.

Dozens of students set up the encampment on May 23 to push the administration to divest from companies that support Israel amid its military campaign in Gaza that has killed over 36,000 people. The university cited “an ongoing public safety issue” as the reason for remote operations, though the encampment has remained peaceful. University President Kimberly Espy and Vice President Patrick Lindsey have offered a closed meeting with some of the activists, but the activists have instead called for a public discussion on divestment.
