In the inaugural year of Speed Climbing as an Olympic sport, Ann Arbor teen Zach Hammer is set to make his debut on the international stage.

Hammer began climbing at the age of three and honed his skills at Planet Rock, a local gym in Ann Arbor. This year, he not only qualified for the Olympics but also graduated from Skyline High School and will be attending the University of Utah in the fall.

July 29, 2024 ~ The Hammer Family, parents Lisa and Gary and older siblings Max and Maggie, are in Europe with the youngest Hammer, Zach, who is preparing to compete in speed climbing for Team USA in the Olympics! Guy talks with the family, as they follow the climbing team to Barcelona for training ahead of next week’s competition in Paris. (CONTINUED) He currently holds the Male Youth A American Speed Record with a time of 5.12 seconds. In 2023, he secured third place at the YETI National Championships and fifth place at the Youth National Championships.

Men’s speed qualification for seeding and elimination will take place on Tuesday, August 6, with the finals scheduled for Thursday, August 8.
