DETROIT, Aug. 8, 2024 ~ In April 2023, the tragic murder of renowned Detroit neurosurgeon Devin Hooper sent shockwaves through the community and led to the arrest of 34-year-old Desmond Burks. Burks faces a slew of serious charges, including first-degree premeditated murder, felony murder, and larceny. The investigation was expansive, requiring collaboration across multiple states and countries. Authorities gathered critical evidence from hours of videotape, thousands of text messages, and numerous witness testimonies. Attorney Todd Flood lauded the Detroit Police Homicide Section and the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for their thorough and diligent efforts in building a strong case, despite significant obstacles such as reluctant witnesses and the need to establish probable cause for accessing digital evidence.
The case took a significant turn when a local resident reported a Range Rover obstructing their driveway. Upon inspection, police discovered blood inside the vehicle, which was registered to Dr. Hooper. When officers attempted to contact him at his home, they received no response while Dr. Hooper’s family reported that he was supposed to be in Indiana. A subsequent search of his residence led to the grim discovery of his body wrapped in a blanket. An autopsy later confirmed that he had been shot twice in the back of the head, raising further questions about the circumstances surrounding his death.
