Michigan Lawmaker Pushing for Tax-Free Holiday for School Supplies

LANSING, June 12, 2024 ~ Back-to-school shopping is one of the biggest budget busters of the year for U.S. families.

According to the National Retail Federation, families with children in elementary school through high school plan to spend an average of $874.68 this year on clothing, shoes, school supplies, and electronics. State Rep. Mark Tisdale (R-Rochester Hills) said his bill would be a “simple 6% discount on school supplies,” with a tax-free period lasting from the third weekend in August only, and apply to all school supplies, including school clothes and athletic equipment. Right now, about 17 states have a tax-free holiday for back-to-school supplies.
