UM Regent Race Shows Stark Division Among Michigan Democrats

LANSING, Aug. 26, 2024 ~ At the Michigan Democratic Party convention on Saturday, a nomination for University of Michigan Board of Regents candidates showed growing divisions in the party over Palestine.

The one contested race at the convention in Lansing saw a large crowd of activists in support of Palestinian rights advocate Huwaida Arraf, due to her support for UM to divest funds from the state of Israel amid its bombardment of Gaza. An uproar occurred when Arraf failed to garner enough votes for one of the two open races for regent, due to the proportionally weighted voting system, with incumbent Denise Ilitch and former regent Dr. Shauna Ryder Diggs winning the slots.

(CONTINUED) UM has been a sight of dedicated activism for Palestine since October of last year, with the university at points shutting down on-campus protests and violently breaking up a month-long student encampment calling for university divestment.
