Trump Attempted Assassination Suspect Charged with Possession of a Firearm By a Felon

PALM BEACH, Florida, Monday, Sept. 16, 2024 ~ Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old man suspected of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump at the Trump International Golf Club on Sunday, has been charged in federal court with possession of a firearm despite being a convicted felon.

(CONTINUED) Routh was apprehended Sunday after Secret Service agents noticed a riffle pointing out of the bushes and opened fire.  The suspect fled the scene in a black Nissan but was quickly detained about 50 miles north of the club.

The former President, along with his golf partner, were swiftly escorted from the scene without harm. 

Routh, who originally hails from North Carolina, has a criminal history, including a 2002 conviction for possessing a machine gun.  Posts found on social media suggest that he holds erratic political views, with entries that offer wide swinging rhetoric and suggest an overall disillusionment with the political system.   

Routh remains in federal custody. Additional charges stemming from the ongoing investigation are expected.
