DETROIT, Nov. 13, 2024 ~ On Wednesday afternoon, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan announced he will not seek re-election in the next mayor’s race.
Duggan, who has been the mayor of Detroit since 2014, made the announcement during a press conference where he reflected on his decade-plus long run in the city’s highest office, during which he saw the city’s bounceback from bankruptcy and reduced crime rates. He added that he will share his plans for his political future in the coming months, but wanted to focus on the current “large” pool of leadership talent in the city that he believes can continue Detroit’s recovery.

Nov. 14, 2024 ~ Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan joined Guy Gordon, Lloyd Jackson, and Jamie Edmonds after his announcement that he won’t seek re-election for a fourth term, and talks about his goal to grow the population of the city, how to fix the state’s population decline, and if he’ll endorse a candidate to replace him.
Currently, three candidates have filed to run for the mayor’s office in 2025: ex-businessman Joel Haashiim, Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield, and Detroit City Council member Fred Durhal III. Duggan declined to endorse a candidate in the now open race, saying he will watch the campaigns to decide his pick.
“This city is prepared to weather what comes, so I am very confident in our city’s future,” Duggan said.
It has long been rumored that Duggan will run for governor in 2026 when Gov. Gretchen Whitmer will be term-limited. Stay tuned with 760 WJR to keep up with Duggan’s political future.
